What's in a bearing?

Are all bearings created equal?

If they roll smooth; is that all that matters?

Curious if there's a differnce between wheel bearings and clutch bearings.

Do the clutch bearings get ALOT more heat? Do they get more vibrations and 'trouble'?

How often should you check your bearings? (Are they all treated the same, or do you check clutch bearings more often than wheel bearings?)

Clutch bearings take the most abuse of any bearing on the car...high rpm, heat, and vibration.  It's a good idea to change them every race weekend, especially after a long main.  I think Lee has them for 10 bucks for a tube of 10, so at a buck a bearing it's cheap maintenence.  Hub and diff bearings don't get as much  heat and vibration, but they are still subject to dirt and grime, so check them for "grittiness" every time you take the car apart for cleaning and clean/replace if necessary.  Most cars used sealed bearings and the seals can be popped off with an xacto, flushed with motor spray, and re-oiled...but once that seal is removed for the first time, you will probably be cleaning them at least every other weekend.  I usually just replace the bearing once it starts to feel gritty, as it will stay clean inside for a while as long as the seal isn't disturbed.  Oh and Ron...get toner.  I was asleep at the wheel and forgot to call ya grin

Right on, so we shouldn't really worry about the material of the shields?

I typically go for carbide diff balls on my electric buggy... do they even make bearings w/a selection of ball bearing material?

I know I've seen ceramic mentioned, but usually only when it comes to motor bearings.
